My approach to art comes from an experience we all relate to… admiring the breadth of a tree and picking up a stick to inspect its beauty. As a toddler, I was known to always gather pieces of wood, to the point of conscripting others to carry all that was found, and my first memory was from preschool when I was presented with scraps of wood, a hammer, and nails. Today, a reverence for wood and craftwork continues. Now, my practice is mediated by a BFA from Queen's University and years working as a carpenter with my furniture-making company, Alternative Woodworks Ltd. Through a multidisciplinary approach alongside traditional woodworking, I investigate the expressive attributes of wood. By contemplating the material’s labour and legacy, my investigation into the the value of wood develops a holistic account of its influence in natural and constructed environments.
I've had work shown across Canada, with Public Art commissioned by the City of Nanaimo, the municipality of Oak Bay, Cowichan Community Centre in Duncan, and by the Victoria Park Neighbourhood Association in Calgary. I’m a member of Nanaimo’s Urban Design Roster, Tofino’s Public Art Committee, and several artists' collectives. As part of presentations I facilitate community outreach with family-friendly workshops. I have participated in Artist Residencies in Canada and abroad and have curatorial experience in several spaces, including owning Points Art Gallery in Duncan, BC.
