DAVID MARTINELLO

Biography / Artist Statement

Since I was a toddler, I’ve been gathering interesting sticks. My first memory is when I was presented with wood scraps, a hammer, and nails. Today, my reverence for wood and craftwork continues, now mediated by a BFA from Queen's University and years of tending to my furniture-making company, Alternative Woodworks Ltd.

Through a multidisciplinary approach alongside traditional woodworking, I investigate the attributes of wood to contemplate the material’s value and legacy. The intent behind my work is to develop a holistic account of its influence in natural and constructed environments.

From my home on Vancouver Island, I nurture opportunities to harness wood’s spirit to connect with the landscape, viewing the world through a storied lens of the material. From an old skid, a discarded piece in a dumpster, to the most unique formations deep within a forest, I engage with a tree’s capacity to become something. A tree possesses all the belonging it requires, but as timber, its potential can be transformed into various purposes such as fuel for heat, construction material, and delicate craftwork.

With an expression of its own making, the circumstances we find wood reflect our relationship with it. By celebrating our innate connection with wood, I engage with its agency so that it can serve as a connective node to the environment and a means for philosophical examination in identifying with the materiality of all things.

My art has been exhibited in various venues across Canada, and I have had municipalities in BC and Alberta commission public artworks. I’ve curated several shows, operated a commercial gallery, and developed a family-friendly print-based workshop. I have participated in residencies around the globe, am a member of several artist collectives, Nanaimo’s Urban Design Roster, and volunteer with Tofino’s Public Art Committee.
